The use of ecosystem-based adaptation tools to rehabilitate the La Hauteur watershed to enhance the livelihoods of the farming community downstream. (February 2014 – February 2016)

Title:

The use of ecosystem-based adaptation tools to rehabilitate the La Hauteur watershed to enhance the livelihoods of the farming community downstream.

Main objectives:

The La Hauteur watershed is which provides water to a large community of farmers and many residential areas of the Baie Ste Anne district has been significantly depleting over the years. This is not only due to the increase in demands but also as a result of human induced forest fires that has in turn affect the water flow, water quality and quantities available. A total of 12 recorded human induced fires had been recorded between 1996 to 2008 which had burnt over 10 hectares of forests in the area. The project aimed at introducing an ecosystem-based adaption system which will restore and manage the ecosystem, reduce vulnerability of the community downhill and increase their resilience to other climate change factors such as longer drought period.

The objectives of the project were therefore to:

Pilot an integrated water resource management for the Cap Samy farming community.

Replant over 1500 plants on the degraded hills above the community to enhance volume of water in the La Hauteur River.
